Our first ever Challenge Cup game has now been confirmed with Barrow Island. We will be playing them at their Ratings Lane Ground on Saturday 11th January 2019.
Barrow Island ARLFC formed in 1935 and have have been playing competitive Rugby League ever since. After winning the Cumbria Cup in 1989-90 they were entered in to the Challenge Cup for the first time. They narrowly lost that first game against Thatto Heath from St Helens.
In 1994 they were back in the Challenge Cup and this time made it all the way to the 3rd round (beating Moorend and Walney Central) before being beaten by the professional Hunslet club.
In 1995 they returned once again to the Challenge Cup and again made it through to the 3rd round (beating Norland and West Hull). This time they were knocked out by the professional Ryedale York team.
That wasn’t their last foray in to the Challenge Cup and they entered a couple more times with the last time being in 2005.
Barrow Island are a club with a long history and a lot of experience in the Challenge Cup so we are expecting a real challenge when we make the 290 mile journey up to Cumbria. However, we wont be phased by this. As we say in the Rhondda; “Hwy Clod Na Golud”
