Today marks the half way point in our countdown to Christmas and our “12 Days of Christmas” success stories. Today we’ve decided to celebrate the clubs involvement in the razzmatazz of the Commonwealth Championships.
🎄 The 2018 Rugby League Commonwealth Nines Championship took place in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia on February 23rd and 24th.
It was an under 23s competition made up of 8 teams:
- Papua New Guinea
The first bit of good news in the run up to the competition was that our very own David ‘Dai’ Albertelli had been selected as both Team Manager and Physio for the Welsh side.
This was quickly followed by more good news; 3 of the 15 man playing squad were Outlaws.
|Name||Outlaws Heritage Number|
|Aneurin ‘Nye’ Walker||4|
With four Outlaws involved, this meant 20% of the players and staff out there representing Wales in the competition came from our club. This is an amazing achievement for such a fledgling club.
The group stage of the competition didn’t go according to plan for the boys in red. They lost to Australia, Fiji and Scotland.
However, in the play-offs the team managed to lift the whole nation by pulling off an amazing result, beating England 10-8.
Wales then went in to the final match. This time a 5th place playoff with Scotland. Unfortunately the lads were narrowly defeated 16-10 and ended the competition in 6th place. 🎄
